Human society and institutions are part of Babylon’s domain, but God is summoning His children to separate from her while there is time.
‘Come out from her and be separate, and do not touch the unholy
thing!’ This is the command of Scripture to the followers of Jesus Christ, to
leave the Great Whore, Babylon, not to rush into the defiled city and embrace
her evil ways. Without holiness, we will never see the Lord!
We are summoned to be the holy
Body of Christ, which is distinct and easily distinguishable from the world
order, morally and spiritually separate from the structures, spiritual powers,
and the ideologies of the present evil age: “in the world, but not of the
world.” Our mission is to call other men and women “to save themselves
from this crooked generation,” not to join it.

Seductive voices in the Church encourage believers to compromise with the world by infiltrating the surrounding culture and its institutions so we may change society’s ungodly character from the inside. This is the so-called ‘Seven Mountains’ cultural mandate that many preachers claim God has given to the Body of Christ.
No such mandate is found in the New
Testament. Nowhere do we find Jesus or his apostles instructing the Church to assume
control of the cultural and political centers of this age, to reform an
inherently sinful society, or otherwise to fix the corrupt structures of society
or the government.
The existing world order was condemned on the
Cross of Calvary, and consequently, its institutions and ideologies are in the
process of dying, and one day, they will vanish from the Earth:
- “The season has been shortened, so that from now on, both those who have wives may be as though they had none, and those who weep as though they wept not, and those who rejoice, as though they rejoiced not, and those who buy as though they possessed not, and those who use the world as not using it to the full. For the forms of this world are passing away” – (1 Corinthians 7:29-31).
- “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it. But he who does the will of God remains forever” – (1 John 2:17).
There is no biblical mandate for the Body
of Christ to manage society or to direct the political system. If anything, the
attempt to do so corrupts believers, and to this reality the history of the church
testifies.
Ironically, many of today’s preachers,
pastors, ‘apostles’ and ‘prophets’ who warn constantly about the “spirit of
Jezebel” are, in fact, dancing to her seductive song.
- “But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman, Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. And she teaches and seduces my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time that she should repent, and she will not repent of her fornication. Behold, I cast her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her, into great tribulation, except they repent of her works. And I will kill her children with plague. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches the reins and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. But to you I say, to the rest that are in Thyatira, as many as have not this teaching, who do not know the ‘deep things of Satan’, as they say, I cast upon you no other burden. Nevertheless, that which you have, hold fast until I come” – (Revelation 2:20-25).
What is wrong with compromising only a
little bit with idolatry if doing so influences the “mountains of culture”? Do
not Jezebel’s prophetic pronouncements reassure us that this is how the ‘deeper
things of God’ work in the so-called “spirit world”? Too
easily we forget the biblical warning: ”A little leaven leavens the
whole loaf!”
We will learn to our great sorrow that
Babylon and her apologists in the Church are teaching “the deeper things of
Satan,” not the things of God or His Spirit. Any believer foolish enough to
venture into the political “mountain,” for example, will discover just where “Satan’s
throne” sits!
- “Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? Or what communion has light with darkness? And what agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has a sanctuary of God with idols? For we are a sanctuary of the living God! Even as God said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Wherefore, Come out from among them, and be separate, declares the Lord, And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you” – (2 Corinthians 6:14-17. Compare Leviticus 26:11, Isaiah 52:5-11).
The Bible certainly does refer to seven
mountains, but it links them to Babylon, “the great whore, the mother of
harlots and the abominations of the earth.” This creature not only sits on
nations, peoples, and the scarlet-colored Beast, but she also rules over “the
seven mountains.” They serve the Unholy City – (Revelation 17:5-12).
THE POLLUTED CITY
The scarlet-colored Beast whom Babylon
rides is the Beast from the Sea described in Chapter 13 of the Book of
Revelation. The Beast is the servant of Satan that wages war on the saints
of Jesus Christ, “those who have the testimony of Jesus” – (Revelation
12:17, 13:1-7).
The Beast’s red
color connects it to the “Dragon, the Ancient Serpent, the one who is called
‘Devil’ and ‘Satan’ and the deceiver of the whole habitable earth.” The Whore
of Babylon sits comfortably on the structures built by the Dragon, all while executing
his attacks on the followers of the Lamb. The city is defiled because Babylon
has shed the blood of Christ’s witnesses – (Revelation 12:9, 17:6, 20:2).
The seven
mountains dominated by Babylon represent seven “kingdoms.” Five of the
seven had vanished by the time John received his vision. One of them existed in
his day, and the seventh empire was yet to come. Each kingdom was an embodiment
of the Beast, which represents the World Empire, a reality that has
existed throughout human history.
The seventh mountain
is the Beast “that was and is not, is himself also an eighth, and is of the
seven. And he is going to destruction.” There is nothing positive
here, nothing worth fixing or that could possibly be reformed. The Beast, the World
Empire, is destined for annihilation.
Babylon will ride this creature until she and her servants are thrown into the Lake of Fire, including every man and woman who has sworn allegiance to the Beast and venerated his image – (Revelation 14:9-11, 19:20, 20:10).
The sins and guilt of Babylon have reached
even to the heavens; therefore, “in one day her
plagues will come, death, and mourning, and famine,
and she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is
the Lord God who judges her” –
(Revelation 18:4-8).
It makes no sense for followers of the holy Lamb
to ally themselves with Babylon in a futile attempt to coax her to change her
ways. It is not the Spirit of God that is tempting the Church to rush into the
Unholy City, but the soothing voice of the seductress, ‘Jezebel’.
Instead, the Lamb calls His people with great
urgency “to come out of her, that you
have no fellowship with her sins, so that you
receive not of her plagues!” Any disciple
of Christ who approaches this Satanic fire will get burned. The present evil age is a ship with
a warped rudder that ran aground eons ago.
This is not a call to abandon the world,
but to engage it with the biblical means, and that includes gospel preaching, faith,
prayer, holy living, and self-sacrificial service for others. This is what it
means to be “in the world, but not of the world.”
The so-called “Cultural Mandate” is a lie. The Body of Christ is called to be a lamp
that illuminates this dark world. We must be everything that the fallen world order
is not. And this requires holiness – separation from Satan and his kingdom:
- “Pursue peace with all men, and the holiness without which no man will see the Lord” – (Hebrews 12:14).
- “Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” – (2 Corinthians 7:1).
